Take note second-time home buyers...

The advantages of home improvement projects for people thinking of moving on from their first property.

The challenge of landing a second home can be just as costly as getting a first foot on the property ladder. The majority of homeowners will want to stay in their second residence for a much longer time than their first, so they may choose to make improvements to help their living conditions.

For a number of second-time buyers, the new property represents an opportunity to start a family.

Whether it be building a conservatory, fitting a new bathroom or kitchen, second-time residences are more likely to receive the owner’s time and care in comparison with a first property. Second-time movers are more likely to have cash to spend on home improvements and look towards making bigger alterations to their home to suit their needs over a longer period. So there may actually be some thinking behind the saying "keeping up with the Jones'" after all!

BIY Houses

Build It Yourself, or Self-build home projects are proving increasingly popular in the UK, which may be due to people beginning to integrate environmentally-friendly technology into their houses.

Raymond Connor, chief executive of BuildStore, believes that increased land availability and cheaper building materials and labour have resulted in a high level of interest in DIY home building.

"With a low supply of quality homes and such good savings to be made right now in terms of land, labour rates and materials prices, there has never been a better time [to self-build],"Mr Connor said.

One advantage to building a house may be that developers can incorporate renewable or microgeneration technologies in line with current global demands to reduce carbon emissions and save energy.

Solar panels, small turbines or an energy-efficient biomass boiler may be worthwhile investments if people choose to protect the environment and generate their own electricity.

Got a house you want building? We'll be happy to muck in!

Protect your home

It's around about now that, if you're lucky, you're booking your summer holiday. If that's the case, it's also the right time to be reviewing your home security. Make sure you're taking all the precautions necessary to properly protect your home. It is a well-known fact that outdoor lighting is one of the most effective ways to protect your property against vandalism and burglary. Intruders obviously do not want to be visible as they attempt to break and enter a house or do damage to property. Therefore approach lighting, back door lighting and certainly lighting along a side alley to your house should be fitted. Remember that the back and sides of your house are often more vulnerable than the front. Another deterrent - especially for the more determined burglar - is a complete Burglar Alarm system installed in the house and made obvious by the siren housing sited on the house wall.
Have a look at the most 'at risk' areas to see if there are any more precautions you could take.

If you're in any way concerned about how secure your home is, let us know and we will happily put you in touch with a friendly tradesman who will talk you through your options and ensure you are as safe as houses!
